Program

The group program

Eight weeks, one ninety minute session a week, capped at eight participants. You bring your own goal. The other seven are the reason you are still working on it in week six.

Who it is for

People who start well and stop quietly

There is a particular pattern this program is built for. You decide on something, you work at it hard for two or three weeks, and then a busy fortnight arrives and it goes. Nothing dramatic happens. It simply stops, and three months later you notice it stopped.

Resolve is not the missing piece. Witnesses are. Sitting in a room where seven other people will hear what you said you would do last week, and will hear what you actually did, changes the arithmetic of a busy Tuesday evening.

It also suits people who want the method without the cost of one to one coaching. The structure is the same. The attention is shared.

How it runs

Eight weeks with a fixed spine

Every session opens the same way: each participant states, in under a minute, what they committed to last week and whether it happened. Eight people, eight minutes. That opening is deliberately the least interesting part of the evening and it is the part that does the work.

What follows is a subject, taken in the same order every cohort, then time for each person to set the next week's commitment against it.

  • Weeks one and twoNaming the goal and writing it so it can be checked. Most people rewrite theirs twice.
  • Weeks three and fourThe real constraint, and the habits that will carry the work. Where most goals quietly fail.
  • Weeks five and sixDecisions that have been deferred, and how to make the reversible ones fast.
  • Week sevenMeasurement. What the last six weeks actually produced, stated plainly.
  • Week eightThe next ninety days without the group, and what each person will keep doing alone.

The detail

Size, cadence and cost

Sessions run remotely, at the same time each week, agreed before the cohort opens. Cohorts run three or four times a year.

  • CapEight participants. The cap is not a marketing device. Nine people cannot each report and be heard inside ninety minutes.
  • CadenceWeekly rather than fortnightly, for eight weeks. The group supplies between session accountability that a solo engagement gets from the day seven note.
  • Session lengthNinety minutes, same time each week.
  • Between sessionsA written commitment posted to the group within a day of each session. One line is enough.
  • Price$1,200 for the eight weeks, paid before the first session.
  • Missing a weekSessions are not recorded, because people do not speak freely when they are. A missed week gets a written summary instead.

Eight strangers on a Wednesday evening turned out to be far harder to disappoint than myself. I finished the thing in week seven.

Ask about the next cohort

Cohorts run three or four times a year and eight places go quickly, so it is worth asking early even if you are not ready to commit. Say what you would bring to it and you will get a straight answer about whether the group or a solo engagement suits you better.
