Eight people on what the work was actually like
Clients are named by first name and role only, which is how they prefer it and how it will stay. Nobody here is a case study, there are no revenue figures, and nothing has been tidied up to sound more impressive than it was.
What I did not expect was how ordinary it felt. No breakthroughs, no big emotional session. Just somebody asking me the same question every two weeks until I ran out of excuses.
I had been telling the same story about my career for four years. It took about six weeks here to notice I was telling it, and another three months to be doing something else instead.
Six months, twelve sessions, and the only clever thing about it was that they kept happening. I had tried to do this alone twice.
Eight strangers on a Wednesday evening turned out to be far harder to disappoint than myself. I finished the thing in week seven.
We had deferred the same decision at four consecutive monthly meetings. It took ninety minutes of the half day to find out that two of us thought we had already made it.
The first goal I wrote was rejected three times. Slightly irritating at the time. It was the only reason I could tell, nine months later, that I had actually got there.
I came in wanting to be better at saying no. What I got was a fortnightly record of every time I had not, which was considerably more useful and much less comfortable.
Moving from engineering into managing engineers is mostly unlearning. Having somebody neutral to be honest with every two weeks made that survivable.
A note on these
Why there are only eight
A practice running since 2007 could put a hundred quotes on this page. Eight is enough to show what the work sounds like from the inside, and a wall of praise stops being informative somewhere around the fifth one.
What these have in common is worth more than their number. None of them describes a transformation. They describe a rhythm that held, a question that kept being asked, and a goal that turned out to be checkable. That is what the method is for.
If you would like to speak to a former client before committing, ask on the contact page. Several people have offered, and an introduction can usually be arranged for anyone considering a six month engagement.
